Dental technician training is available from technical schools that include Durham Technical Community College, Bates Technical College and McFatter Technical College. Durham Technical Community College in North Carolina offers a dental laboratory technician program that is fully accredited and prepares students to become Certified Dental Technicians. Durham Tech's dental technician training program uses hands-on methods to teach students how to fabricate dental prosthetics such as crowns, bridges and orthodontic appliances. In the fifth semester of the program, students are introduced to actual laboratory work through practical training rotations to working off-campus dental laboratories. Graduates of the five-semester program obtain an Associate of Applied Science degree with several specialization certificates available.
Bates Technical College in Washington also offers an accredited training program for dental technicians. Prospective students must pass visual and dexterity evaluations to demonstrate their ability to visualize three-dimensional forms before entering the program. After completion of the eight-quarter program, graduates receive an Associate of Applied Science degree.
McFatter Technical College in Florida offers another training program for dental laboratory technicians. The accredited 18-month program includes a five-week internship. Graduates are prepared to design and fabricate dental restorations and implants from a variety of materials.
