As of October 2015, Alberto M. Carvalho is the superintendent of the Miami-Dade County Public School System and has served in this capacity since September 2008. Among his accomplishments while in this office, he won National Superintendent of the Year in 2014.
Under Mr. Carvalho's leadership, the fourth-largest school district in the nation is recognized as one of the best-performing urban systems. When he took over the reins of the system, it was suffering from serious financial woes, but Carvalho's expertise in finance allowed him to pull the system out of those difficulties. In addition to his administrative duties in the system's main office, he appointed himself as the principal of two award-winning area schools.
