Free summer school programs offered through city programs and universities do exist in certain communities. For example, New York City offers free programs for students in a particular income bracket, as does MIT, which selects students on the basis of merit.
New York City offers a free, eight-week summer science program for girls, as well as a math program for seventh-grade students. Admission is through an application process. MIT has programs such as the minority introduction to engineering and science and the research science institute.
In addition to free summer camps, many summer camps offer scholarships for students based on demonstrated need.
