New Jersey Institute of Technology fields teams in 10 varsity sports as of September 2015: baseball, basketball, cross-country, fencing, lacrosse, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field and volleyball. The school's teams are dubbed the Highlanders and have competed in the NCAA's Division I since 2009.
New Jersey Institute of Technology fields men's teams in baseball, lacrosse and swimming and diving and has both men's and women's teams in its other seven varsity sports. Club sports include men's bowling, ice hockey and rugby. The school has intramural teams in badminton, basketball, cricket, fencing, football, soccer and volleyball. The school announced plans in 2015 for a new 3,500-seat basketball arena, the NJIT Wellness and Events Center, which will open in 2017.
