Two-year colleges typically confer the Associate of Arts degree and the Associate of Science degree. In addition to degrees, students can earn a certificate in a marketable skill, such as dental hygiene or HVAC technician, at a two-year college.
Other degrees earned by students at two year colleges include the Associate of Arts degree in Teaching, in Engineering Science and in Fine Arts, among others. Students who earn an associates degree in one of these areas at a two-year college may continue studies at a four-year college toward a bachelor's degree.
Two-year colleges also grant professional certificates and licenses when the student has successfully completed coursework and passed an exam specific to the profession. Colleges offer professional certificates in fields that range from software installation and management to accounting and medicine.
