SMU stands for Southern Methodist University, which is located in Dallas, Texas. The university is home to seven degree-granting schools and as of 2014 enrolls approximately 11,000 students. The university was founded in 1911 and opened in 1915.
Although it was founded by the United Methodist Church, the school is non-sectarian in its teaching. The school offers degree programs in undergraduate, graduate and professional studies. The school is home to the George W. Bush Presidential Center. In 2015, US News and World Report ranked the university as tied for 58th best in the country. SMU's athletic teams are called the Mustangs, and the university competes in the NCAA's Division I American Athletic Conference.
