- Evaluation stage At this stage, a child is carefully examined in order to ascertain whether he or she is able to cope with the new grade. Academic skills, intellectual functioning and social-emotional adjustment are tested before recommendations of advancement are made.
- Motivation stage At this stage, the child is required to decide whether he or she wants to skip a grade or not. A child that is self motivated to skip a grade has better chances of succeeding as compared to one who is pressurized to skip. It is a good idea to let the child decide.
- Timing A grade skip should take place at the start of the school year in order to allow the child to adjust easily with the rest of the class. However, it may also be a good idea to let the child skip a grade in the middle of the year if one wishes to have previous teachers overseeing the transition.
- Trial period Before a child is fully admitted into the next grade, it is wise to allow for a trial period in order to take note of the progress. The trial period can be around 6 weeks, allowing the child to either progress or change strategy if things are not working out.
