In June 2012, the New Jersey state legislature passed the New Jersey Medical and Health Sciences Restructuring Act, a bill that made most of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey schools part of Rutgers University. These schools included the New Jersey Medical School, the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, the New Jersey Dental School, the School of Nursing and the School of Public Health. The School of Health-Related Professions and the Newark and Piscataway campuses of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences were also included.

University Hospital in Newark operates independently and has its own human resources department. Rowan University acquired the School of Osteopathic Medicine and the Stratford campus of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.
