What Is Service Learning?

Service learning is an opportunity for students in the classroom to engage in volunteer work and community service that is tied to a course's instruction. The goal of service learning activities is to teach civic responsibility while enhancing the livelihood of the community.

Students enrolled or participating in service learning in an academic setting are often provided with volunteer opportunities to complete individually or as a group. Once the community service hours or projects have been completed, instructors often ask students to provide a reflection of the experience and to use these experiences to engage in class discussions about community engagement, civic duties, character building and social skills.
