The second largest school district in San Antonio, its enrollment area spans approximately 144 miles. Student ethnicity is predominately white or Hispanic. Noted for its academic excellence, the district includes several Blue Ribbon Schools, and all of its main high schools are considered academically challenging.

The district hosts after-school care, gifted and talented programs, ROTC, and extensive sports and arts activities. Beginning in kindergarten, its dual language program aims to help both native English speakers and native Spanish speakers become fully bilingual by grade five. Sports facilities include two football stadiums, each seating 11,000 attendees, and Blossom Athletics Center, which houses tennis, baseball and soccer games. Aquatic events are held at Josh Davis Natatorium and Bill Walker Pool.
