The ACT, a college readiness exam, offers several sample writing prompts as well as essays on its website. The actual prompts used during evaluation will vary from test to test.
Sample writing prompts include but are not limited to the following: debating the extension of high school to five years, changing the high school grading system to reflect pass or fail instead of traditional letter grades, or using social media in schools. The writing portion of the test is approximately 30 minutes long. The writing prompt aims to assess the writing essentials taught in high school English and in a first-year college-level composition course. Prompts usually involve social issues applicable to high school students. The position on the issue should be well supported.
