Sam Houston State University is a public university located on Avenue J in Huntsville, Texas. As of December 2014, there are 20,181 students enrolled and 598 academic staff members. The college offers 80 undergraduate degrees, 50 master's programs and six doctoral degrees.
Sam Houston State University was founded in 1879. It was originally called the Sam Houston Normal Institute, and then the name changed in 1923 to Sam Houston State Teachers College. In 1965, the name changed again to Sam Houston State College, and finally became Sam Houston State University in 1969. The university is organized into seven separate academic colleges, including Sciences, Business Administration, Education, Criminal Justice and Health Sciences. In addition, there is a college for Fine Arts and Mass Communication and one for Humanities and Social Sciences.
