One common science fair project using toilet paper determines which brand of toilet paper is the strongest, explains Education.com. The experiment is conducted by placing pennies on top of a wet square of toilet paper secured over the top of a tin can with a rubber band.
The experiment allows for students to apply the scientific method by observing their materials and creating a hypothesis on which toilet paper will be able to support the most pennies, notes Education.com. Once the hypothesis is made, the students conduct the experiment placing pennies on the paper until the pennies fall through the paper into the can. Students record the data and repeat the experiment with the next sheet of toilet paper. Once the experiment is completed, student analyze the data to determine which hypothesis was correct and why.
Education.com suggests doing the experiment with different types of toilet paper ply strengths, but the Alabama Learning Exchange doesn’t place a restriction on the types of ply, allowing the students to analyze what factors may increase the strength of the paper.
Another project, available from Science Buddies, experiments with compression forces by determining if a person’s body weight can be supported by a toilet paper tube. The project uses sand, marbles, masking tape and toilet paper tubes to determine if the materials placed inside the tube determine the amount of weight the tube can bear and why.
