Required tests for students in California include the Smarter Balanced English language arts, literacy and mathematics tests and the California Science Test, the CST. These tests are components of the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress Administration.
Smarter Balanced tests are administered online, while the CST is a paper-based exam. Smarter Balanced Tests are administered to all students in grades three through eight and students in the 11th grade. The California Alternative Assessment, the CAA, is administered in English and mathematics in place of the Smarter Balanced tests to students with significant cognitive disabilities.
The California Modified Assessment, the CMA, is an alternative science assessment for students with individual education plans taken in place of the CST. The California Alternative Performance Assessment, the CAPA, is a science test for students with severe cognitive impairments that prevent them from taking either the CST or the CMA.
