As of 2015, there are about 75.9 million French language speakers in the world and about 87 million people who speak French as their second language. The number of French speakers in the world is estimated to be about three percent of the population.
The French language is spoken in 51 different countries and is the official language in 29 countries. There are many more people who speak French as a third or fourth foreign language, so it is difficult to determine what proportion of the population speaks French.
About 40 percent of French speakers live in Europe while 35 percent come from sub-Saharan Africa. About eight percent of the French population lives in North America, and 15 percent lives in North Africa and the Middle East.
