Of the 10 top private schools in New York State, seven are in New York City. The top four schools in the city all have A+ grades in terms of academics and A- grades for student culture and diversity. Collegiate School, which holds the sixth-place spot on Niche's list, has an A+ for grades but a B- for student culture and diversity.
Of the top private schools in New York, three make Niche's list of the top 10 private schools in the United States. Horace Mann occupies the fourth-place slot, Trinity comes in at number six and Dalton sits in tenth place.
To rank New York's private schools, Niche uses a combination of statistical data and opinion-based research. The organization considers government data, public data and proprietary data. Then, it sends out surveys to current students, parents and alumni of each school. When ranking the schools, 60 percent of the score is due to academics, 30 percent to student culture and diversity and 10 percent to survey responses.
