The term PQ4R describes a learning aid, and it stands for “Preview, Question, Read, Reflect, Recite and Review.” PQ4R is a common method taught to students to help them learn new or difficult material.
In the first step in the process, Preview, students scan over any new material to see what it contains. This gives the student an idea of what’s coming, including various topics and subtopics. The second step, Question, means that students should ask themselves questions about what they are reading. It may even help to write these questions down throughout the course of the reading. The “W” questions, such as “who, what, when, where and why,” are a good place to start. The next step is Read. This means to simply read through the material. After reading, the next step is to Reflect on the material. This stage is important because it ensures that students understand what they read. It might help to notice any contradictions in the information, for example. The fifth step is Recite, in which students practice the information by reciting it out loud or by asking questions. The final step is Review, in which students re-read and review the material to pick up anything that was missed.
