As of 2015, the most popular subjects studied in college are computer science, communications, government/political science, business and economics. English language and literature, psychology, nursing, chemical engineering and biology are additional top majors.
Computer science is the study of computers and how they function, as students learn about hardware, software and other applications. Communications focuses on speech, writing, strategy, nonverbal messages and media. Psychology majors learn the biology of the brain, including cognition, intelligence, personality, perception and mental illness.
The nursing major concentrates on overall health. This includes evaluation, diagnoses and treatment. After graduation, certification is required to become a registered nurse.
