NCCER craft tests follow along with the approved curriculum and are taken at the end of every module to prove that the student is proficient in the topic that was covered. Passing a test does not lead to immediate certification. NCCER assessments, however, test the student's in depth knowledge of the craft being studied. Students should have four years of on the job experience in the field in which they are testing. Once the assessment is passed and field performance is verified, the student earns their certification.

NCCER, or the National Center for Construction Education and Research, issues cards to those who complete a Core Curriculum with an Accredited Training Sponsor, or those who complete an official NCCER written assessment. Full credentials include a certificate, wallet card and a transcript, and they are sent directly to students as they complete levels of training or assessments.

NCCER offers training through Accredited Training Sponsors. They are spread throughout the United States and in select international locations. While they offer eBooks and other study materials online, assessments are unable to be taken via the Internet. Instead, assessments are taken at NCCER Accredited Assessment Centers. If a nearby center is not available, the Prov Exam Services department should be contacted to make arrangements for testing.
