For the first decade of the 21st century, the top five most popular baby boy names were Jacob, Michael, Joshua, Matthew and Daniel. By 2014, the top five consisted of Noah, Liam, Mason, Jacob and William. The name Ethan ranked eighth for the first decade of the century, while William came in 10th. As of 2014, the name Ethan ranked seventh.
The name Michael fell to seventh place by 2014, while Joshua ranked 25th by 2014. In 2014, Matthew ranked 16th and Daniel 10th. James, which was number 18 in 2000, was ninth as of 2014, its highest rank of the century.
Noah has been as low as 31st in popularity this century, in 2002 and 2003, but its popularity since has been on an upward trend. It hit the top 10 in 2009 and displaced Jacob in 2013, knocking the name from the first place position where it had been since 1999. Noah remained the number one name for boys in 2014.
