What Are the Most Popular Male Dog Names?

According to data from VPI pet insurance, the largest pet insurance company, the 10 most popular male dog names are Bailey, Max, Charlie, Buddy, Rocky, Jake, Jack, Toby, Cody and Buster, as of 2015. The same 10 were the most popular male dog names in 2014.

Pet MD had visitors to its website vote on their favorite names for puppies. The 10 most popular male names as of September 2015 are Gus, Trapper, Finn, Cooper, Bailey, Boomer, Otto, Hawkeye, Wrigley and Ace.

Owners choose the names of their pets to reflect their own personality, interests or sense of humor. So someone might name his dog Wrigley because he is fan of the Chicago Cubs, who play at Wrigley Field, or he might choose the name Gus after a character in "Lonesome Dove."

People also pick names inspired by the look or breed of their dog. A man might name his dog Bailey because the dog's coat is the same color as Bailey's Irish Cream, or use the German name Otto for a German Shepherd.

A dog may have a trait that lends itself to a name, such as a dog with keen eyesight being called Hawkeye, a black dog with white paws being called Sneakers or a dog with distinctive spots being called Spot.
