According to the Educational Records Bureau (ERB), more than 1,200 primary and secondary independent schools use the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE) for admissions as of 2015, and it's available internationally. There are four levels of testing that depend on the student's grade level, and these are the primary, lower, middle and upper levels. All except the primary level are available as both pen-and-paper and online tests.
Students are tested on their verbal and quantitative reasoning, mathematics and reading comprehension, and the questions are multiple-choice. There's an unscored essay test as well that schools look at for admissions purposes. The test's score ranges vary by section and level. A common alternative to the ISEE test is the Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT).
