The American Association of Nurse Assessment Coordination, the American Nurses Credentialing Center and the MDS Training Institute offer courses for minimum data set certifications. The core training information is provided from the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, but additional certifications may be required in some states.
Most MDS programs are based on continual training, with new material and updates added regularly. Some state agencies provide training during annual visits to long-term patient care facilities. An MDS certification is not legally required by all states or facilities. However, the credential is helpful to ensure proper care and planning for long-term Medicare and Medicaid patients.
