Online EMT certification programs are not necessarily scams, but there are very few accredited online or distance-learning institutions. Choosing a program that is not certified by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs affects licensure, employment and advancement opportunities.
The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, or CAAHEP, only lists two EMT/paramedic programs that are taught online, through distance learning or some combination of the two. Lenoir Community College in Kinston, North Carolina offers a hybrid online/classroom program that leads to a certificate or an associate degree. PERCOM/Kilgore College Consortium in Abilene, Texas, offers the only accredited program that is taught completely online. Students considering an online EMT program must carefully research licensure requirements for the state in which they plan to work.
