Norwich University, a private military college, is located in Northfield, Vermont. Norwich is the oldest private military college in the United States and has both military and civilian students.
Norwich University was founded in 1819 by former West Point superintendent Captain Alden Partridge as the first private military college in the country. It is the oldest of the U.S. senior military colleges and is known as the birthplace of the Reserve Officers' Training Corps. The college's website states that more than 2,300 students attend classes on the rural, 1,200-acre campus as of 2015. Another 1,200 graduate students are completing their studies online.
