The NCRC exam tests three real world skill sets, known as WorkKeys, that are considered essential to employee success in any field: applied mathematics, location information and reading for information. Each WorkKey measures the test taker's cognitive abilities, critical thinking and research skills. All three WorkKeys are scored at one of four levels that include Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Each score helps employers decide how likely potential employees can succeed at their jobs.

The ACT offers online practice tests and webinars to use as study guides to help test takers prepare for the exam. Test takers can purchase them individually or in packaged sets to use at any time. Businesses can also hire onsite ACT experts to help their employees study for and take the NCRC exam.

Other organizations that offer test preparation materials include the NCRC Advocates and Mometrix Test Preparation. The costs of these programs vary, but each one includes study guides, workbook materials and practice tests. The Mometrix study materials are available either as a printed book or a downloaded e-book.
