Each chapter of the National Junior Honor Society may choose a method to induct new members. The ceremony typically highlights the service work or academic achievements of each new inducted member of the National Junior Honor Society.
Candidates for induction into the honor society are evaluated based on grade point average, service to the community, leadership skills, citizenship and character traits. Students eligible for membership must be in the second semester of sixth grade or seventh, eighth or ninth grade as designated by the bylaws of the chapter. The national standard for academic scholarship recommends that National Junior Honor Society inductees maintain a scholastic average of at least an 85 percent or a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale. Selection of candidates for the honor society and ultimately, the induction ceremony, is often determined by a majority vote of a faculty council as designated by the chapter's bylaws.
