Phillips Exeter Academy, better known as Exeter, ranks number one on the 50 Best Boarding Schools in the U.S. list published by The Best Schools. Exeter offers a free education to any student with a family income of $75,000 or less.
Factors contributing to Exeter's ranking include preparation for the future, academics, affordability and the percentage of students boarding on campus.
For decades, this New Hampshire learning institute has been referred to as the unofficial feeder for Harvard, serving boys and girls in grades nine through 12. A post-graduate year is also available. More than 80 percent of faculty members hold advanced degrees, as of 2015, and 46 percent of students receive some form of financial aid. Rather than relying heavily on textbooks, the instructors use the Harkness Method of dialogue-based learning.
