Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, Berklee College of Music and Marylhurst University all offer music therapy degrees through online course study. However, most educational institutions that offer online music therapy degrees require some on-site clinical attendance to complete the degree. Bachelor's degree requirements for the American Music Therapy Association state that 1,200 hours of clinical training through fieldwork and internships are necessary. The field of music therapy is designed to improve a patient's overall cognitive well-being as well as her emotional and physical health. This necessitates supervised study practicing therapist-patient interaction and clinical internship.
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods' Music Therapy Equivalency Distance Program is available to students with a bachelor's in music and allows them to complete almost all of the course online. The two-year program requires participants to attend a three-day campus residency in the fall of each year and at least one five-day residency in the spring. Internship requirements can be met at approved facilities near the student's home.
Marylhurst University offers both a bachelor's degree program in music therapy and an equivalency program for those meeting the criteria.
