According to the National Association of College Stores, students spent and estimated $370 per term on required course textbooks and media in the fall of 2013. Additional educational materials, such as pens, highlighters, paper and binders, cost approximately $193 per term.
The average money spent does not reflect whether the books are new or used. According to the NACS, 40.6 percent of the students reported paying for course materials through grants, scholarships and student loans. Financial assistance covered an average of 57 percent of course material costs. In addition to textbooks, students often need course packs, readers and customized materials for classes, such as digital or electronic resources.
