A medical typing test assesses how accurately and quickly someone can transcribe an audio recording of a physician's dictated notes. The online test simulates a work situation. Candidates listen to short digital voice recordings, then convert these into word processed documents in a timed situation.
Some medical typists use a computer and a foot pedal to pause recordings. They transcribe the health care provider's notes including patient history, details of exams, procedures, lab tests and diagnoses, then create correspondence, reports and other materials to be placed in patient files. Medical transcriptionists must also have some medical terminology knowledge and ensure documents are grammatically correct.
