Student codes are obtained one of two ways. If the student's teacher has purchased MathXL with their textbooks, the student can find the access code packaged with a brand new book. Alternatively, the student can purchase a stand-alone MathXL Student Access Kit from a book store or use a credit card to purchase instant, online access to MathXL. For instructors, teacher access codes come with the Class Registration Kit and are located on the inside of the front cover.

Math XL is a collection of courses that corresponds to Pearson Addison-Wesley and Pearson Prentice Hall math and statistics textbooks. It consists of learning modules that can be customized to fit the student's learning style. Student features include interactive tutorials, a multimedia ebook, and a study plan designed to help them learn the material at their own pace. The program offers teachers access to course sharing tools, a homework and test management system and grade book tracking.
