As of 2013, there are 665 universities in India. These include 201 private and 290 state public universities. Thirteen are state open universities, and one is a national open university.
Thirty-eight are government universities, while 11 are aided by the government. Open universities primarily focus on distance learning education for the student body. All institutions are supervised closely by the Ministry of Human Resource Development as well as the Universities Grants Commission, while quality is ensured by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council.
