The three community colleges are Houston Community College System, Lone Star College System and San Jacinto College. The private universities include Rice University, North American University, Houston Graduate School of Theology, Houston Baptist University and University of St. Thomas. The three law schools are University of Houston Law Center, South Texas College of Law and Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University.

The health-related learning institutions include University of Houston College of Pharmacy, University of Houston College of Optometry, Institute of Biosciences and Technology, University of Texas Health Science Center and MD Anderson Cancer Center. Additional health universities are Prairie View A&M University, Baylor College of Medicine, Memorial Hermann CIRI, The Methodist Hospital Research Institute and Texas Children's Hospital.
