Full Answer

  1. Write a word or phrase on the front of a flash card

On the front of a 3 x 5 index card, neatly write one English vocabulary word, and only that word, in the center of the card.

  2. Write the definition on the upper left corner on the back of the flash card

Flip the card over, and in your own words, write the definition of the word in the upper-left corner. If you are learning English as a second language, you may also wish to write the definition or translation of the word in your native language underneath the definition.

  3. Write the word in a sentence on the upper right corner on the back of the card

On the upper right corner, write a full sentence that correctly uses the vocabulary word. This helps you to better understand the meaning of the word, and makes it easier for you to remember how to use the word.

  4. Repeat the first three steps until you have a complete set

Repeat this process for every vocabulary word until you have a stack of flash cards. To keep your cards together, secure them with a rubber band.

  5. Use the flash cards to study English

To use the flash cards, look at the word on the front and try to remember the definition on your own. Keep going through the flash cards until you know all of the definitions without needing to flip the cards over for reference.
