It takes four years to graduate from veterinary college and receive a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. As of 2015, there are 30 colleges of veterinary medicine that the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredits. Most veterinary medical schools are public institutions.
In 2013, approximately 6,800 people applied for 2,700 open slots for graduate programs in veterinary medicine. After completing an undergraduate degree, individuals looking to attend a veterinary medical school must fill out an application, take the Graduate Record Examination, send in recommendation letters and participate in interviews with interested colleges. After completing veterinary medical school, individuals may pursue one or two veterinary specialties if desired. The AVMA recognizes 22 specialties.
