Discovery Education offers a series of interactive digital textbooks, called Techbooks, covering three main areas of study: science, math, and social studies. Science Techbooks are available in two distinct series, one for elementary and middle school, and one for high school that covers biology, chemistry, physics and astrology.
Techbooks are specifically designed to help teachers in the transition to digital resources. They include sample lessons and models and suggestions for activities to engage students, as well as professional development. The software is highly interactive, and it combines audio, video, note taking and simulations. The digital format allows for regular updates at no additional cost, dramatically lowering the environmental impact of textbooks. The technology is platform neutral, meaning they do not require any particular operative system to function and are therefore used in a variety of classroom situations.
Discovery Education has recently developed a Discovery Education Techbook App for iPad, available for free through the iTunes store. The app provides another way for users to bridge the digital divide, since it allows users to download interactive Techbook content directly on an iPad. Once downloaded, content does not require an Internet connection to play. Discovery Education Techbooks have been quite successful so far, with over 700,000 copies sold as of 2014.
