A number of schools in the United States offer programs in anesthesia technology, including Renton Technical College in Renton, Washington, and Pulaski Technical College in Little Rock, Arkansas. Both are approved by the American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians.
At Renton Technical College, course work includes general medical knowledge, medical terminology and pharmacology. Students learn about the operating-room environment, anesthesia equipment and anesthesia administration techniques; they also complete training in advanced cardiac life support. Intensive clinical experience at local area hospitals is part of the curriculum as well. A total of 118 contact hours is required for completion of the program. Graduates earn an associate degree, which prepares them for entry-level positions in the field of anesthesia technology.
The anesthesia technology program at Pulaski Technical College is offered in collaboration with Arkansas Children’s Hospital. It is a one-year program with 61 contact hours required, 29 of which are in general education; the remainder are in anesthesia technology. The college offers classes at the Little Rock campus as well as a distance-education program through partnerships with a number of colleges throughout the state. Students receive clinical training at several facilities, including Arkansas Children's Hospital and the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, and graduate with an associate degree.
