Texas A&M University is the first public institution of higher learning in Texas with its date of establishment April 17, 1871. Originally named the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas, the institution achieved university status in 1963. The University’s main campus in College Station, Texas, opened in 1876. The campus covers an area of 5,200 acres.
The Texas A&M University has two branch campuses in Galveston, Texas, and Doha, Qatar. Classes at the campus in Qatar began in 2003.
The Texas A&M University offers 139 undergraduate degree programs and 268 graduate degree programs. The university offers degrees in aerospace engineering, biochemistry, chemical engineering and other subjects. Some of the subjects in which doctorate programs are available include architecture, computer science, educational psychology and management. The university also offers graduate certificate programs. Some of the university’s masters’ and doctorate degrees are available through its distance education program.
As of spring 2015, there are 64,600 students enrolled in the university. Of these, more than 2,400 are members of the Corps of Cadets. Military training was once mandatory for all students but became voluntary in 1965. Besides the national service academies, the Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M University commissions more officers than any other institution in the country.
