Horticulture is the art and science of cultivating and managing crops, gardens, plants, flowers and trees. Not to be confused with botany, the scientific study of plantlife, horticulture encompasses a broad spectrum of areas, from crop production to flower arranging.
Some careers in horticulture include landscape design, nursery production and arboriculture. Careers in marketing, sales and research are also available. The American Society for Horticultural Science and the American Horticultural Society provide resources and information about the many different areas of horticulture and what kind of education is needed to enter various horticultural careers. The AHS also offers gardening programs each year that range in suitability for beginners to expert gardeners.
