Full Answer

The Health Occupation Aptitude Examination is administered by the Psychological Services Bureau. Completion of the test is frequently required for admission to many advanced programs in the medical field. The HOAE is used to determine whether or not applicants are prepared to enter the programs to which they are applying. For many schools, it is weighted equally or nearly equally to the applicant's past academic performance.

The HOAE is a computerized test comprised of five separate assessments that measure the applicant's knowledge and skill in academic aptitude, spelling, reading comprehension, vocational adjustment and natural sciences, which includes chemistry, biology and physics. The academic aptitude, vocational adjustment and natural sciences sections each have 90 questions. The spelling section has 60 questions, and the reading comprehension section has 50. Each test is timed separately; the entire examination takes 2 hours and 30 minutes.
