Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College and Spelman College are historically black colleges in Atlanta. Clark Atlanta University is coed, while Morehouse College accepts only male students and Spelman College is a women-only school.
Clark Atlanta University was established in 1988 when Atlanta University and Clark College merged into one institution. As of 2015, Clark Atlanta University has approximately 3,400 students and nearly 40 programs of study.
Morehouse College and Spelman College both have roots in theological schools from the late 1800s. Morehouse College has received significant funding from private donors, businesses and the government, including Oprah Winfrey, The Kellogg Foundation and the Department of Defense. Spelman College offers 27 majors on campus and additional programs through the college's connections with the Atlanta University Center.
