The Harcourt Math Grade 4 book covers a large range of mathematical concepts and processes, including place value and comparisons, ordering numbers, addition and subtraction. The volume also encompasses values, telling time, multiplication, and reading tables and graphs. Later chapters discuss division, geometry, and fractions.
This math book is a comprehensive volume. Each broad topic is divided into subtopics, and the material grows progressively more difficult as the student gets further into the book. Multiplication, for example, first appears in chapter eight, and chapters nine through 12 expand on the topic and introduce more complicated applications of multiplication. In addition, the volume includes a math glossary that provides relevant mathematical terms and their definitions.
The book also has an e-Lab component that allows students to compete exercises online and check their work in real time. The student just clicks on the chapter title, and the online tool takes them to an exercise designed specifically for that chapter. The online version also includes a tab called "That's a fact!," which provides practice problems and ways for students to test themselves. As an alternative, the hard copy book comes with a companion workbook containing practice problems and activities that complement the course material.
