In high school, junior year is 11th grade. High school begins with ninth grade, or freshman year. Sophomores are in grade 10. The last year of high school, senior year, is 12th grade. Many students begin planning for their lives after high school during their junior year.
Juniors often start checking out specific colleges and researching scholarships. Some juniors take standardized tests such as the SAT and ACT that colleges use during the admission process. Subject-area SAT tests are frequently taken right after specific classes have been completed in the junior year. Certain advanced-placement exams for college credit are also offered in the 11th grade.
