Korean is the official language of both North and South Korea and of the autonomous prefecture of Yanbian in China. It uses the Hangul writing system, although prior to the 20th century, the language adapted Chinese characters and still uses them in some areas. Many dialects of the Korean language exist, and the standard language is based on the dialect of Seoul. Korean is spoken by about 77 million people worldwide, as of 2012.
