The Indiana University School of Optometry and the Miami Valley Career Technology Center offer good optometric technician training programs, according to the American Optometric Association. Des Moines Area Community College, Madison Area Technical College and the U.S. Army Medical Center also offer this training.
The Indiana University School of Optometry offers a two-year associate degree in Optometric Technology/Opticianry. In addition to classroom work, students receive extensive clinical experience in local optometric centers. They also train at the university's optical laboratory.
The Miami Valley Career Technology Center offers a 47-week optometric technician course. The program prepares students for tasks such as documenting patients' medical histories, administering preliminary tests, measuring and fitting eyeglasses, and teaching patients how to use contact lenses.
