Medical coding courses and programs are available from Penn Foster Career School, the U.S. Career Institute, Kaplan University, Drexel University and Middlesex Community College. Students can register on the websites of these institutions. Some of these programs are available on campus, whereas others come in an online format.
Penn Foster Career School's Medical Billing and Coding Online Program leads to a career diploma in the field and helps prepare students for the AAPC Certified Professional Code exam, which in turn leads to students becoming certified coding professionals. Students can complete the program in 10 months. The program's Virtual Work Experience adds a practical component to the course work.
The U.S. Career Institute has a Medical Coding Specialist program that teaches students the relevant basics of human anatomy, medical terminology and pronunciations, and coding software. Kaplan University offers a Medical Billing and Coding Certificate that, as of 2015, admits students from all states with the exceptions of Delaware, Missouri and Wisconsin.
The Certificate in Medical Billing and Coding program at Drexel University is a six-month program that qualifies students to take the American Medical Billing Association, AAPC and American Health Information Management Association exams. Middlesex Community College provides a Medical Billing and Coding Certificate Program for those in the central Connecticut region.
