Some of the best boarding schools in the United States are located in New England, and the number one school in the country, according to a 2014 report by Business Insider, is Phillips Exeter Academy, known familiarly as Exeter. Phillips Academy Andover in Andover, Massachusetts, is number two.
Business Insider used data including endowment, average SAT scores and acceptance rate to compile its list. Eight of the top 10 schools are in New England, but good boarding schools are not limited to the Northeast. Lake Forest Academy in Lake Forest, Illinois, is another good choice, as is Western Reserve Academy in Hudson, Ohio. Those looking for a more temperate climate could try schools in California, such as The Webb Schools in Claremont, or The Thacher School in Ojai, which comes in at number 10. With Thacher's 13 percent acceptance rate, though, and tuition and fees over $50,000, applicants have their work cut out for them.
Students should not let any of the top schools' fees stop them from applying, though. Not everyone has $47,000 to shell out for an Exeter education, and that is why Exeter has offered free tuition since 2007 to current and accepted students whose household income is less than $75,000.
