What Are Some General Rules for Debating?

Debate teams should consist of two to three individuals, and each debate should involve two teams, according to the World Debate Website. During the debate itself, each team receives a chance to speak two or three times, with the debate alternating between the two teams.

Further guidelines for debates govern chairing and scoring of the debate. One individual chairs each debate, and up to two additional adjudicators may assist in the judging. The chair is responsible for keeping time and moving the debate along smoothly. Debaters must use appropriate language during their speeches, and they may not use props or visual aides.
