The full name of IIT entrance exam is Indian Institutes of Technology's Joint Entrance Exam. This is an assessment conducted by a joint organization of leading Indian institutions of technology. Upon successful sitting and passing the exam, a candidate becomes eligible to join an undergraduate program in one of the colleges located in 16 places around the country.
The Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) is a collection of independent colleges that offer engineering and management courses. A student may choose to study at Mumbai, Mandi, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Patna, Roorkee, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Guwahati, Bhubaneswar, Gandhinagar, Varanasi, Indore, Jodhpur or Ropar. Additionally, there is an examination center in Dubai. Although each institution is autonomous, it is linked to all the others by a common council. The council acts as an overall overseer, provides curricula and supervises exams.
The legislation that founded the group of institutes came into existence in 1961, and declared them institutions of national importance. Individuals can book for the entrance exam online by filling an application form. In the form, the applicant specifies what specialization they want to join, and where they'd like to study. In addition, the applicant pays an application fee, which is usually non-refundable. The colleges offer undergraduate degree programs as well as master's and PhD degrees.
